The HSE is inviting the public to tender for the position of running the country’s first injecting centre for drug addicts.

The medically supervised facility will be based in Dublin and the tender will be granted on a pilot basis for 18 months, to be evaluated at six months and again at 18 months.

A spokesman for the HSE said supervised injecting facilities help reduce drug overdoses and disease spread through shared needles. He described these facilities as a “clean, safe, healthcare environment”, adding: “they offer a compassionate person-centred service which reduces the harms associated with injecting drug use and can help people access appropriate services.”

Tenders must be submitted by September 25, with further details on etenders.gov.ie
